With just a few simple tweaks and a handful of pantry ingredients, you can upgrade your jar of pasta sauce for a delicious and quick weeknight meal!

- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 large white onion, diced into 1/2-inch pieces
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground beef
- Jar of your favorite pasta sauce (I like Rao's or Mezzetta)
- 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon raw cane sugar
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan (plus more for garnish)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 2 tablespoons fresh basil chiffonade
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, and add diced onion. Cook until onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook 1 minute longer, until fragrant.
- Add ground beef to the pan and browned, breaking up with the back of a wooden spoon.
- Drain grease from ground beef if desired and add your jar of pasta sauce to the pan; reduce heat to medium-low.
- Add diced tomatoes, sugar, balsamic vinegar, and spices, and stir to combine. Simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
- Add grated parmesan and fresh parsley and stir to combine. Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings as necessary.
- Serve warm over pasta or veggies and enjoy!
