Getting a consistent source of high-quality proteins is key to my meal planning. I've found it can be hit or miss to find organic chicken, grass-fed and grass-finished beef, and wild-caught salmon on a weekly basis from my local grocery store, so thanks to ButcherBox's meat delivery service, it's comforting to know my freezer is always stocked with a variety of high-quality meats whenever I need them.
I've been subscribing to ButcherBox for years, and love that they deliver premium cuts of meat to my doorstep whenever I need them. Here's my honest ButcherBox review, based on my personal experience.
How to Place an Order
Placing an order with ButcherBox is a breeze. I simply sign in to their website to choose from a wide variety of meat cuts, poultry, and seafood. ButcherBox sends me an email whenever my next box is about to ship, so I can customize what I want in every delivery, take advantage of member-only deals and seasonal specials, plus change the delivery date or cancel an order with just a few clicks and no penalty, so that I'm sure to receive exactly what I want only when I want it.
I love that ButcherBox prioritizes sustainability and freshness in their packaging. The meat arrives frozen and packed in an insulated box, lined with eco-friendly materials that can be fully recycled, as well as dry ice packets, to maintain optimal temperature during transit.
I've rarely had issues with the packaging, and I love how easy it is to recycle the packaging. (There have been one or two times that the plastic has been sliced, but after contacting their customer service, they gave me a refund right away.) Overall their customer service is excellent — they are quick to respond and always very helpful if I need them (which is rarely).
Quality and Variety
One of the reasons I (and so many others) love ButcherBox is because of their commitment to sourcing high-quality meats. The quality of the meat is unsurpassed in my opinion — all their beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, their chicken is free-range and organic, they only use wild-caught seafood, their pork is crate-free, and all of their products are humanely raised, with no antibiotics or added hormones — EVER.
Pricing
Now, through May 29th, new customers receive $100 off ($20 off for five months), plus free ground beef (that's two pounds of 100% grass-fed and finished ground beef for FREE) in every box for the first year of your membership. Get this limited time deal!
ButcherBox offers several subscription options so you can choose the box size and frequency that's best for your family. You can choose from one of their curated boxes, or customize your own box to your preferences. We get the big box every other month, which comes with 18-26 lbs of different meats for $306, but a classic box with 9-14 lbs of meat will run $169. Pricing does vary based on the specific cuts and meats you select, but the overall value is great, averaging less than $6 per meal, which is a good deal considering the quality of the meat. ButcherBox also runs promotions and special member offers, so you can stock up on the products you love at an even more affordable price.
Although premium meats will always come at a cost, for us, the convenience of doorstep delivery (and free shipping!), the commitment to ButcherBox's sustainable practices, and the flexibility makes a ButcherBox subscription worth it. I would say the cost of ButcherBox is similar to the same quality of meat at a Whole Foods, but compared to my local grocery store prices, for the same quality cuts the price difference is negligible. ButcherBox carefully sources their meats, so you can count on high-quality products every time.
ButcherBox goes beyond quality by prioritizing ethical and sustainable practices. Their partnership with farmers who employ regenerative agriculture and animal welfare practices demonstrates their commitment to a better food system. By supporting ButcherBox, you contribute to the preservation of small-scale, sustainable farming while enjoying superior meats.
Tips for Getting the Most from ButcherBox
- Plan ahead: One reason I love ButcherBox is it makes my meal planning so easy, because I know exactly what protein to build my meal plan around, based on the cuts and meats I've ordered. This also helps reduce food waste and streamline the prepping process throughout the week, plus it's one less thing to grab from the grocery store.
- Make room in your freezer: Before you get your ButcherBox delivery, plan to either use or store the meat immediately. It will arrive frozen, so I like to put it in my freezer or let it thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours if I'm planning to use it right away.
- Try new recipes: In addition to allowing you to choose your cuts and types of protein, ButcherBox has a great blog that gives you inspiration for their products, so you're never without an idea of how to use your delivery. Don't be afraid to try new recipes and cooking techniques. Experiment with different marinades, seasonings and cooking methods to make the most of your order.
- Explore additional products: In addition to their meat cuts selections, ButcherBox often offers other products like seasonal offers (like corned beef for St. Patrick's Day and turkey for Thanksgiving), member deals, as well as high-quality pre-packaged proteins like chicken nuggets and meatballs.
